As the largest lake in Southeast Asia, there are a lot of things to see, feel and listen humbly to the stories of amazing cultures that existed as large as the lake.
There are seven districts surrounded by Lake Toba and consisted several ethnic group which are Batak Toba, Simalungun, Pak-Pak and Karo. They have many different cultures like traditional village and cultural atraction.
If you started the trip from Parapat that also known as a gate into Lake Toba, you can find legendary spot called Batu Gantung or hanging stone. You can reach this destination by boat. Local people believe that Batu Gantung is a body of a princess who tried to kill her self by jumping to the lake from hill, because she didn’t want to marry to someone whom chosen by her parents.
Half an hour from Batu Gantung by boat next destination are a traditional village in Samosir Island. Samosir island located in the middle of Lake Toba which have many traditional village. One of the famous place to visit is Tomok village. Tomok has a story about Si Gale-Gale, the dancing statue, don’t forget to dancing with Si Gale-Gale who have a mystical story. A long time ago, Sidabutar kingdoms are in war with another village. The war lead by his son, Simanggale. King Sidabutar heard that his son dead in a battle, It’s make he so sad for a long time. The villagers try to entertain their king by made some statue which have a similar face with Simanggale. The statue can dance by himself with magic power. Villagers believe that Simanggale spirit go to inside and make it dancing.
Here you can also find King Sidabutar cemetey and hear the stories about Batak Kingdoms from local people. After that you can find a museum of Batak and souvenir shop.
Do you know that there is a story about canibalism in the land of Bataknese? Historical evidence about canibal village are not far away from Tomok. The village called Huta Siallagan in Ambarita, Siallagan is the name of King in this area. You can find heritage place that used to execute people. People who executed was a criminal who done bad things like rape, a thief that became enemy of Siallagan King. Before execute, people will discussed how and when to do the execute.The sacred time using the old Batak Calendar. They have a algojo to behead the prisoners to drop, and then the body will eat by the people in this village. They believe if they eat that body so they will have power that the prisoner has. There are some diorama also in Huta Siallagan so you can enjoy the stories and seeing the diorama.
OK let’s move on, now do you want to see the land of a man who fell from the sky? Lets go to another part of Lake Toba. You will take the road trip to the edge of Lake Toba. In a long way you will see a traditional house called Rumah Hobon, rice field and of course the lake. Bataknese believe that the first man on earth is from Sianjur Mula-Mula, the man who came from the sky and landed to a mystical hill called Pusuk Buhit.That man called Si Raja Batak. There is a monument of Raja Batak tribes in this village.
We continue the journey through Dairi and Karo districts which also have fascinating landscape. Karo highland has Tongging Village as the famous place to have beautiful angle of Lake Toba view. Karo highland also has some unique cultures and traditional village. One of them we can found it in Dokan Traditional Village. Dokan village has 8 traditional houses and the people in this village preserving their culture like dancing and sing. Above all dont forget to taste the traditional food of Batak like Arsik, Naniura or just eat at local restaurant.
